Wyoming trust companies

Wyoming charters public trust companies under Title 13, Chapter 5, and treats family and private family companies in separate articles of the same chapter. Directed trusts are in the Uniform Trust Code at W.S. 4-10-718. A Jackson Hole story is not a certificate of authority.

Editorial only. Not legal, tax, or investment advice. Statutes and licensee lists change — read the primary source and the date on each citation.

This directory currently lists 7 companies by primary domicile. Additional-domicile footnotes on a listing do not change that filter.

Who regulates

The Wyoming Division of Banking charters and lists trust companies. The public roster is on the Division’s Trust Companies page (accessed 2026-09-09). The same Division publishes charter-application packets for public trust companies and separate packets for family trust companies, including capital-pledge and surety-bond forms.

We are not reprinting a bonding or capital table for Wyoming. The Division’s forms and W.S. 13-5, plus current rules and the fee schedule, are the place to read those requirements as of the day you open them. If a number is not on a page we opened for this file, it stays out.

Public vs family vs private family

W.S. Title 13, Chapter 5 is the trust-company chapter. Article 5 is public trust companies (13-5-501 formation; 13-5-502 application; public notice and hearing). Other articles cover supervised, family, and private family companies. A “Wyoming trustee” pitch that is actually a PFTC is a different diligence file.

Public-charter applications go to the commissioner with organizational instruments and a fee set by rule. The Division’s fee-schedule page (accessed 2026-09-09) lists a public and family trust-company charter application fee; that is an application fee, not a client trust fee, and we are not treating fee-schedule lines as a reason to appoint anyone.

Directed trusts

Wyoming’s directed-trust rule is in the trusts title: W.S. 4-10-718. An administrative trustee that follows a trust advisor or protector is an excluded fiduciary as to the directed duties. Qualified beneficiaries may, unless the instrument forbids it, designate an investment-direction advisor by unanimous agreement.

If the firm also offers investment management or digital-asset custody, say whether those sit inside or outside the excluded-fiduciary seat. Where a Wyoming listing is marked directed / mixed, the firm publishes both.

What to verify on a Wyoming appointment

Listed Wyoming companies whose Trust File directed-trust field is directed or directed / mixed are collected on the Wyoming directed trustees landing. That page explains the W.S. 4-10-718 role first; it is not a ranking.

Questions people actually ask

What is a Wyoming public trust company?

W.S. 13-5, Article 5 governs formation of public trust companies. W.S. 13-5-501 allows one or more adults to organize a corporation or LLC as a public trust company at a place in Wyoming designated in the organizational instrument, subject to an application to the banking commissioner (13-5-502) and a public meeting or hearing process.

Are family trust companies the same charter?

No. Title 13, Chapter 5 also contains articles for chartered family trust companies and private family trust companies. The Division’s public roster notes that websites are not provided for private family trust companies. This directory lists public (and similarly public-facing) charters, not PFTCs.

How does Wyoming define a directed trust?

W.S. 4-10-718. If the instrument (or a court order, or a permitted unanimous beneficiary designation) requires the trustee to follow a trust protector or trust advisor, the trustee is treated as an excluded fiduciary under W.S. 4-10-715 and 4-10-717 as to those duties. The protector or advisor becomes the fiduciary in place of the excluded fiduciary for the directed duties.

Where is the official list?

The Wyoming Division of Banking trust-companies page publishes a “Wyoming Trust Companies” roster (spreadsheet/list). Confirm the name there, not only on the Wyoming Trust Association member directory.
