Company comparison
Alta Trust vs Capital First Trust
Alta Trust Company and Capital First Trust Company, Inc. are both independent South Dakota public charters with advisor-retention stories. Alta is directed / mixed — an administrative or directed seat plus Investment Trustee and Distribution Trustee roles, and it also markets CITs and private funds. Capital First publishes Advisor Directed and Advisor Friendly (directed and delegated) pages and says it is trust-only, not bank-affiliated. Same domicile statute, different product mix. This page does not pick a winner.

Both names are on the South Dakota Division of Banking September 2026 roster as public TC.2 charters. That is the charter class, not directed-trust relief. SDCL chapter 55-1B only helps if the instrument uses it.
Alta’s listing is labeled directed / mixed on purpose. Capital First’s listing is labeled directed trustee because the marketed personal-trust story is Advisor Directed / Advisor Friendly, not an in-house investment book. Read how to read a listing before you treat either pill as a statute package.
What stays unknown
- Fees — Alta discusses fees only qualitatively on Personal Trusts; Capital First’s schedule is unpublished here. Ask each firm. Do not invent dollars.
- AUM / AUA — not published on the pages reviewed for either file.
- Bonding or insurance figures for these two companies. Capital First cites Division exam cadence; that is not a coverage table.
- Which office (Sioux Falls vs a TSO or out-of-state office) will administer a given file.
- Whether a given Alta appointment is the administrative/directed seat, an investment or distribution trustee seat, or a CIT / private-fund engagement.
Questions people actually ask
Why does Alta show “directed / mixed”?
Because the same public pages offer an administrative (or directed) trustee seat and also Investment Trustee and Distribution Trustee seats, and the advisor-platform pages market collective investment trusts and private funds. Disclose which product is the engagement. A mixed label is not a quality score.
Directed or delegated at Capital First?
The firm publishes both. In a directed seat it says the chosen advisor directs investments and Capital First focuses on administration; in a delegated seat it says it appoints the advisor and oversees performance. The firm says the legal difference matters. Get the seat in writing.
Which office administers?
Confirm Sioux Falls versus a trust-service or out-of-state office in writing. Alta’s privacy notice lists Lone Tree, Colorado, and Puyallup, Washington. Capital First publishes Milwaukee and Mendota Heights. A Sioux Falls credential does not prove South Dakota administration if the team sits elsewhere.
